April reminds us of BLOOMS.
Gardens with fresh mulch.
Tulips and daffodils reaching for the sky. (don’t even think about it, snow!)
The beginning of a long-running backyard BBQ season.
And baseball. Fast cars. Fun festivals. Dirt bikes. Art shows. Grandkids. 🤍
All of these things translate to J-O-Y, and with the weight of the world and circling headlines these days, we want our newsletter to provide a moment of respite and enJOYment. We’re so glad you’re here.

With warmer weather (finally!), comes the lure of outdoor entertaining, splashing in the pool, and backyard BBQs. If you’ve been dreaming about building or firing up the outdoor kitchen, we have some must-have tools and amenities you should consider. Let’s take a look:
- The right grill. Before taking the plunge, think about how you’ll use the grill. Ask yourself, “Will I (or your grillmaster) be doing basic grilling, smoking food, or something else?” The answer will help guide you to the best grill for your needs. Pro tip: look for a grill with a lifetime warranty.
- Smoker. Reminiscent of authentic Texas BBQ (right in your backyard!), smokers are gaining popularity, and you should give them some thought if you enjoy the taste of smoked meats. Pro tip: a smoker also serves as a secondary grill spot for larger gatherings.
- Outdoor refrigerator. Keep beverages cold and food chilled prior to use within arm’s reach with an outdoor fridge. Love nugget ice? Consider adding an ice machine, too.
- Durable countertops. They’re not only practical–they’re beautiful! Be sure to add plenty of countertop areas around the grill for food prep and delivery. Think about how you’ll use the space, too–be sure to allow enough room for uncooked food, cooked food, and utensils. Then, beneath the countertops, you’ll have room for cabinets and amenities (think an undercounter fridge). Pro tip: seal the countertops when installed and then again every few years to keep them beautiful for a long time to come.
- Sink. A nearby water source during cooking is essential. It doesn’t have to be a large one–a small sink is just fine. Keep in mind that adding a sink requires tapping into existing plumbing and sewer lines (which can be complicated). Be mindful: the sink and outdoor fridge will need to be winterized over the winter.
- Pizza oven. It’s a brilliant addition, and it doesn’t have to only service pizza…think appetizers, roasting, baking, and more. Pro tip: plan for 18 inches on one side and 24 inches on the other, for a total of 36 inches of clear counter space.
- Edible garden. Easily incorporate fresh herbs and vegetables for healthy outdoor meals–think thyme, sage, parsley, and rosemary, for starters. If you have more room, add greens and other favorites like tomatoes (pico de gallo!) and bell, sweet, or hot peppers.
Do you have an outdoor kitchen that brings you J-O-Y? We’d LOVE to see it–send us a photo or tag us on Facebook!
