Which household items should you clean, and which household items should you toss? We’ll share what to do with what, along with creative (and effective) ways to keep things clean under your roof!
- Kitchen Sponge. TOSS IT! This must-have accessory collects bacteria quickly. To keep it fresher for longer, be sure to wring it out after each use and allow it to air dry. Once the sponge starts to tear or has a lingering odor, it’s time to toss it.
- Shower Curtain. WASH IT! Add a shower curtain AND a towel with laundry detergent to your washing machine (the towel will provide some “scrubbing” power). For higher quality shower curtains, this can work numerous times.
- Dish Cloths. WASH IT! Be sure to launder dish cloths with bleach every few days. For meat or chicken prep areas, opt for paper towels or disinfectant wipes since these spaces can carry higher amounts of bacteria.
- Toilet Brush. TOSS IT! Clean with bleach between uses and replace at least annually.
- Pillows. WASH IT! Most pillows can be laundered in warm water on the gentle cycle using a mild liquid detergent (excluding foam pillows). Wash pillows twice a year or four times a year in warmer climates.
- Garbage Cans. WASH IT! Take it outside, squirt some dishwashing detergent inside the can, and use your garden hose to clean out any remnants. Allow it to dry completely. Sprinkle the bottom with baking soda to help absorb new odors.
