Gourds, Gourds Everywhere

“Hey, have you come to sing pumpkin carols?”
–It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Nothing kicks off the true start of autumn like pumpkins. They are the orange, green, and white cherubs of fall. And they’re accompanied by some of our favorite things…

The weather cools.

Cups of hot chocolate froth and steam.

Chilly evenings wrap us in fluffy blankets and warm socks.

Holiday time with family is drawing near.

We’re not trying to start a household war right before the holidays, but…did you know that there is a correct way to load a dishwasher? 😱

It has to do with how the appliance is designed. It doesn’t fill up water like a bathtub; instead, it works more like a shower. The majority of machines have at least two spray arms––one under the upper rack and one on the very bottom of the appliance. If you block those jets, your dishes won’t get truly clean. Let’s take a look at a few more of our favorite tips:
  1. Place cups, mugs, and bowls face-down on the top rack.
  2. Plastic items (especially thinner plastic) should be placed on the top rack since the heating element is usually in the bottom of the dishwasher.
  3. Plates, serving bowls, and other oversized items should go on the bottom rack. Anything bulky or heavy should go toward the back to improve weight distribution.
  4. Tilt items at an angle so water doesn’t collect on concave surfaces.
  5. Mix up utensil types in each section of the cutlery basket so they don’t end up resting together. Forks and spoons should be placed “up” so the dirtiest part is more exposed to the water.
  6. Before you start a cycle, give the racks a gentle shake. You’ll hear some jingling, but nothing should bang around.
  7. Rinse aids can be helpful when washing glassware since they’re designed to help water slip off the surface of dishes (rather than water beading up).
  8. Don’t overcrowd your dishwasher, and make sure each dish has a clear path to the water source in each load for optimal cleaning.
  9. Don’t put the following items in the dishwasher: cast iron, fine china, certain cutlery, hand-painted glassware, and wooden items.
  10. No need to pre-rinse dishes. (What!? 🤯 ) It’s true! Modern dishwashers can handle dishes that haven’t been pre-rinsed (be sure to get the major chunks off, though), and you can actually inhibit the detergent and dishwasher from working effectively. Water circulates within the appliance to knock anything loose off your dishes, and the cloudiness of the washer is measured by a sensor. If this sensor recognizes that there’s food on your dishes, your dishwasher will run a more effective cycle, which gives you a better clean.
