With more than 3,500 mosquito species worldwide and more than 400 in the U.S., mosquitos are here to stay. But there are ways to prevent them from ruining your next night on the patio—and keep yourself mosquito-bite-free.
Why Mosquitos Bite
While it may seem like it, we’re actually not a mosquito’s favorite meal. “Many mosquitoes wouldn’t bite a person—they bite frogs, birds, lizards,” says Dina Fonseca, Ph.D., chair of the department of entomology at Rutgers University. “But we’ve domesticated them to realize that we’re a source of blood.”
Mostly, mosquitoes live on sugar from plants. “Only female mosquitoes bite—they’re little moms getting blood to be able to make eggs,” Fonseca says. “They use the blood to feed the eggs.” 😳
Preventing Mosquitos
There are ways to make your yard less enticing to mosquitoes—and fortunately, most of them just require a little work (and no money!) on your part.
- Remove all standing water: no water, no mosquitos.
- Set a DIY mosquito trap: you’ll need two different-sized buckets and some sticky tape or flypaper. “You add in water, a little grass or yeast to make the environment an enticing place to lay eggs,” Fonseca explains. “Then you put canola oil on the sides of the container and flypaper, so they get stuck.”
- Plant naturally-repellent foliage: lavender, lemongrass, citronella grass, lemon thyme, rosemary, basil, and/or catnip.
- Set up a fire pit: mosquitos (and other bugs) hate smoke.
- Fire up a fan: this creates a breeze that outmatches a mosquito’s tiny wings, but it still leaves you a little exposed if the mosquito uses your body as a shield for the fan and bites you on the back.
- Spray DEET-based repellant: even though it’s a little on the harsher side as a chemical, it is effective in keeping mosquitos off of you.
- Use lemon eucalyptus oil: if you or someone you know has a reaction to DEET, this is a great alternative. In fact, lemon eucalyptus oil and DEET were the two most effective mosquito repellants in a Journal of Insect Science study.
