The Last Flicker of Summer,
The First Spark of Fall

“August is the border between summer and fall”
– Terri Guillemets

As August winds down, Northern Nevada comes alive in that magical moment between seasons—where backyard barbecues and balloon-filled skies coexist, and the comforts of home take on renewed meaning.

In this issue, we’re serving up inspiration on how to host a football watch party with a gourmet twist (yes, elevated snacks can be crowd-pleasers). We’ll also dive into the exciting revitalization of The Oddie District in Sparks—an emerging hub for creativity, commerce, and community. And speaking of what elevates all of us together, we highlight how Renown Health’s local advancements are shaping quality of life in our region, especially after a historic kidney transplant milestone this month.

You’ll also find a curated roundup of late-August and early-September events—including the awe-inspiring Great Reno Balloon Race, a spotlight on the welcoming Curti Ranch neighborhood, a peek at our standout properties, and the conversations happening across our social media.

And, as always, we close with kind words from clients who remind us why we love doing what we do.

A great football watch party does two things at once: it keeps eyes on the game and makes your home feel like the place everyone wants to be. The secret is mixing familiar flavors with a few gourmet upgrades, then setting up your space so guests can graze, cheer, and relax without crowding the kitchen. Here’s a complete playbook that balances elevated bites with easy execution—and ties it all to a welcoming, well-run home.

Set the Field: Zones, Flow, and Atmosphere

  • Viewing Zone: Angle seating toward the screen with clear sightlines; add floor cushions and throws to expand capacity. Keep a small side table within reach of every seat.

  • Grazing Zone: Use the kitchen island, console table, or dining buffet as your “food field.” Place plates at one end, utensils midway, napkins at both ends.

  • Beverage Zone: A separate drink station reduces kitchen traffic. Include an ice bucket, bottle opener, and a marker for labeling glasses.

  • Outdoor Assist (weather permitting): If you have a patio or deck, put a secondary snack or wings station outside to disperse crowds.

  • Sound & Scent: Keep the pre-game playlist low enough for conversation; switch to broadcast audio for kick-off. Light one subtle candle near the entry—avoid competing food aromas.

Gourmet Swaps for Game-Day Classics

Take the foods everyone expects and dial up the flavor with simple, chef-style upgrades.

  1. Wings, But Better

    • Chimichurri Roast Wings: Dry-rub with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika; roast until crispy; toss with bright chimichurri (parsley, cilantro, garlic, red wine vinegar, olive oil).

    • Gochujang Honey Wings: Bake or air-fry, then glaze with gochujang, honey, soy, rice vinegar, and a touch of butter.

  2. Sliders with Substance

    • French Onion Smash Sliders: Caramelize onions low and slow; top smash-seared patties with Gruyère on toasted brioche. Finish with a swipe of Dijon-mayo.

    • Buffalo Cauliflower Sliders (Veg): Roast florets, toss in buffalo sauce, layer with celery-slaw and blue cheese on mini potato rolls.

  3. Nachos that Don’t Sog Out

    • Sheet-Pan Al Pastor Nachos: Toss pork (or jackfruit) with adobo and pineapple; bake on tortilla chips with Oaxaca cheese; finish with lime-pickled red onion and cilantro just before serving.

  4. Queso, Elevated

    • Queso Fundido con Poblano: Melt Chihuahua or Oaxaca with roasted poblano and optional chorizo; serve in a cast-iron to hold heat. Offer warm flour tortillas as an alternative to chips.

  5. The “Nice” Board

    • Mediterranean Field Board: Marinated olives, whipped feta with lemon zest, roasted red peppers, herb hummus, cucumbers, warm pita. Add harissa honey for drizzling.

    • Individual Charcuterie Cups: Perfect for circulating—thin breadsticks, a wedge of aged cheddar, salami rose, cornichon, and a grape cluster.

  6. Flatbreads for the Win

    • Fig & Prosciutto: Naan or premade crust with fig jam, goat cheese, prosciutto; bake and top with arugula and a balsamic drizzle.

    • Roasted Mushroom & Truffle: Cremini + shiitake with thyme, fontina, and a light kiss of truffle oil post-bake.

  7. Snackable Sides

    • Truffle-Parmesan Popcorn: Toss hot popcorn with melted butter, a few drops of truffle oil, lemon zest, and finely grated Parm.

    • Crispy Brussels Chips: Halved sprouts roasted cut-side down until dark and crisp; finish with sea salt and a squeeze of lemon.

  8. Sweet Finishers

    • Stout Brownies with Espresso Glaze

    • Mini Bourbon Pecan Pies

    • Cinnamon-Sugar Churro Bites with Warm Dulce de Leche

Make-Ahead Game Plan (So You Can Watch, Too)

Two days before

  • Shop, chill beverages, and prep chimichurri, pickled onions, and dessert components.

  • Gather serveware, line trash and recycling bins, wash extra glasses.

Day before

  • Caramelize onions, roast poblanos, marinate wings/pork, pre-slice veggies.

  • Set up zones and label platters with sticky notes so helpers know what goes where.

Morning of

  • Assemble boards (cover and chill), bake brownies, make popcorn seasoning, pre-warm plates in the oven on low.

30 minutes before kick-off

  • Roast or air-fry wings; bake flatbreads; warm queso in cast iron.

  • Fill water dispenser and ice buckets; put out napkins at both ends of the buffet.

Halftime

  • Refresh wings, add the sweet course, swap in a fresh bowl of popcorn or chips.

Batch Drinks: Easy, Impressive, and Crowd-Friendly

  • Citrus Shandy Bar: Light beer plus a pitcher of lemonade; offer orange and lemon wheels.

  • Rosemary-Grapefruit Spritz (Mocktail or Cocktail): Grapefruit juice, club soda, rosemary simple syrup; add gin or keep spirit-free.

  • Fall Sangria: Dry white wine, sliced apples and pears, splash of brandy, cinnamon stick. Make it zero-proof with nonalcoholic white wine or sparkling juice.

  • Michelada Station: Salted rims, lime wedges, tomato-chile mix, light lager.

Provide still and sparkling water, plus a labeled ice scoop to keep things tidy.

Dietary-Inclusive Play Calls

  • Clearly label V, GF, DF, and NF items.

  • Offer one hearty plant-based protein (jackfruit al pastor, buffalo cauliflower) and a gluten-free starch (corn chips, lettuce cups).

  • Keep allergen-free zones separate on the buffet to avoid cross-contact.

Styling Your Spread: Simple, Polished, Practical

  • Height & Texture: Use cake stands or inverted bowls under platters for visual layers. Mix wood boards with white platters for a clean look.

  • Warmth Matters: Cast-iron for hot dips; chafers or tea lights for sliders and wings; coolers for perishables when traffic is heavy.

  • Real Napkins + Compostable Backups: A small stack of cloth napkins feels elevated; keep extras handy.

Quick Recipes (5 Steps or Fewer)

Truffle-Parmesan Popcorn

  1. Pop 10 cups popcorn. 2) Melt 3 tbsp butter; add ½ tsp truffle oil. 3) Toss with popcorn.

  2. Add ½ cup finely grated Parmesan, 1 tsp lemon zest, salt. 5) Toss and serve warm.

Chimichurri (for wings or drizzle)
1 cup parsley, ½ cup cilantro, 2 cloves garlic, 2 tbsp red wine vinegar, pinch red pepper flakes, ½ cup olive oil, salt. Pulse to a coarse sauce.

Whipped Feta
Blend 8 oz feta, ¼ cup Greek yogurt, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp lemon zest, pepper until smooth.

Espresso Glaze (for brownies)
Whisk 1 cup powdered sugar, 1–2 tbsp strong espresso, and a pinch of salt until pourable.

Family, Pets, and Comfort

  • Kids’ Corner: A low table with mini charcuterie cups, fruit, and coloring pages keeps little fans happy.

  • Pet Plan: Set up a quiet space with water and a chew to minimize under-foot traffic during high-energy plays.

  • Comfort Touches: Light throws, a basket of socks for shoes-off households, and a room-temp water carafe reduce “Where is…?” interruptions.

With a few smart upgrades and a thoughtful home setup, your football watch party becomes more than a game—it’s an experience guests will ask you to repeat all season. Have a question about real estate or entertaining? Reach out to us anytime.

Sparks is getting ready for a major transformation. Construction has officially begun on the Oddie District, an ambitious redevelopment project turning the former Lowe’s Home Improvement store into more than 110,000 square feet of mixed-use space. Once complete, this will be the largest retail redevelopment in our region to date. Click here, and let’s explore the vision of this bold reinvention.

When people ask what makes Reno–Sparks a great place to live, “world-class healthcare close to home” now sits high on the list. Renown Health has long been the region’s medical backbone, and its latest milestone—performing the first live donor kidney transplant here in Northern Nevada—underscores how access to advanced care is reshaping daily life, family logistics, and long-term wellbeing across our community.

A Milestone That Keeps Care At Home

On August 11, 2025, surgeons at the Renown Transplant Institute completed Renown’s first live donor kidney transplant. In an extraordinary moment for our region, local mother Melanie Davis donated a kidney to her daughter, Lanie Hope Smith. Renown held a press conference recognizing the surgical, anesthesia, nursing, and support teams whose years of planning made the day possible—and emphasized what this means for Northern Nevadans: for the first time, comprehensive transplant care can be delivered here at home, removing the burden of out-of-state travel for many families.

Local media also highlighted the breakthrough, noting it as Renown’s first living donor kidney transplant—an inflection point that signals more procedures to come as the program ramps up.

Why This Matters For Every Day Life

  • Less time on the road, more time with support systems. Patients can avoid weeks away in another state, keep caregivers close, and maintain continuity with local specialists.

  • Better outcomes and faster access. Renown notes that living donor transplants can mean shorter wait times and improved long-term results compared to deceased donor transplants.

  • A full transplant journey in one place. Opened in December 2024, the Renown Transplant Institute offers evaluation through lifelong follow-up, building a complete care pathway in Reno.

The Bigger Picture: Renown’s Investments Strengthen Community Health

Renown’s transplant milestone sits within a broader wave of upgrades that enhance quality of life for families at every stage:

  • A best-in-class Surgical Trauma ICU at the Tahoe Tower (Tahoe 9). The new unit features 34 private patient rooms, each with a private bath—improving privacy, infection control, and the overall patient and family experience.

  • Expanded neonatal and pediatric critical care. Renown Children’s Hospital increased NICU capacity from 39 to 49 bassinets and added more private rooms in the PICU (from 11 to 16), giving parents higher-acuity pediatric care without leaving the region.

  • South Meadows Specialty Care Center (opened Jan. 27, 2025). This South Reno hub adds advanced imaging, a surgical center with six operating rooms, cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology suites, with the Conrad Breast Center opening in mid-2025—all part of a $469 million multi-year investment in facilities that improve access and reduce wait times.

  • Only Level II Trauma Center for adults and children in the region. Renown serves roughly one million residents across 17 counties spanning ~100,000 square miles—a vital safety net for both everyday life and outdoor-adventure emergencies that are part of Northern Nevada’s lifestyle.

An Academic Health System That Attracts Talent–And Keeps It Local

Renown’s affiliation with the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) created Nevada’s first academic health system, expanding clinical care, research, and training. That means more specialists choose to practice here, more students train here, and more families can count on a deep bench of expertise without leaving town.

How This Elevates Quality Of Life–And Real Estate Decisions

As a brokerage serving the Reno–Sparks area, HomeGate Realty hears from buyers who rank healthcare alongside schools, commute routes, and outdoor access. Renown’s advances change the equation:

  • Confidence for families and caregivers. From pediatric intensive care to complex adult procedures, the range of services nearby eases stress and supports multigenerational households.

  • Stability for careers and businesses. Strong healthcare infrastructure attracts employers and medical professionals, supporting local job growth and a resilient economy.

  • Lifestyle continuity. Whether you’re training for Tahoe-Rim trails or welcoming a new baby, having advanced care minutes—not states—away helps households stay active and rooted here.

Final Thoughts

At HomeGate Realty, our role is to help you weigh practical, everyday factors—like proximity to comprehensive healthcare—alongside neighborhood character and home features. If you’re considering a move within Reno–Sparks or relocating here, we’re happy to talk through areas that keep you close to the care and conveniences that matter most, including Renown’s growing campuses.
