Renown’s Standalone Children’s Hospital in Reno: What Is Funded – and What Is Still Proposed

Renown’s Standalone Children’s Hospital in Reno: What Is Funded – and What Is Still Proposed

Renown Health has announced a major step forward for pediatric care in northern Nevada: a planned standalone children’s hospital on the Renown Regional Medical Center campus in Reno. The announcement is significant, but it is important to distinguish between what is already committed and what still needs to be designed, financed, approved, and built.

For HomeGate Realty, this is first and foremost a community-quality-of-life story. For many households, access to pediatric specialty care is one consideration among many when choosing where to live. It belongs in the same conversation as commute patterns, school options, home layout, neighborhood feel, and the everyday services that help a community work well.

Here is a clear look at the public information available as of October 2026.

The short answer

Confirmed: Renown received a $40 million philanthropic gift from entrepreneur and philanthropist Tom Golisano. Renown says the gift makes it possible to plan a standalone children’s hospital and expand pediatric care on the Renown Regional campus. The health system has also joined the Golisano Children’s Alliance.

Still proposed: The actual facility is in the planning stage. Renown has not publicly announced a construction start date, opening date, full project budget, building size, final bed count, final design, or a detailed breakdown of how the $40 million will be spent.

That distinction matters. A historic gift is a real commitment. It is not the same thing as a completed building or a published construction plan.

What is funded and confirmed

A $40 million gift is committed

On September 10, 2026, Renown announced a $40 million gift from Tom Golisano—the largest philanthropic gift in Renown’s history. Renown describes the gift as the catalyst for a standalone children’s hospital and an expansion of pediatric services for the region.

The gift is the clearest funded element of the project. It gives Renown a major source of committed capital and a foundation for moving the project forward. However, the public announcement does not assign dollar amounts to specific components such as construction, equipment, family spaces, staffing, or clinical programs. That level of detail may come later as planning advances.

The project location is identified at the campus level

Renown says the planned hospital would be built on the Renown Regional Medical Center campus in Reno. The current Renown Children’s Hospital is operated within Renown Regional at 1155 Mill Street, rather than in a separate children’s-hospital building.

The announcement identifies the campus, not a final parcel, building footprint, or site plan. That is an important difference for neighbors, future buyers, and anyone trying to understand how the campus may evolve.

Renown’s existing pediatric platform is already operating

The new hospital is being planned around a pediatric care system that is already in place. Renown says its current children’s hospital operates across several floors of Renown Regional and includes northern Nevada’s dedicated children’s emergency room, a verified Level II pediatric trauma center, a 55-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and a 16-room pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Renown also says it has grown to 24 pediatric specialty disciplines. In 2025, more than 84,000 children received care through Renown Children’s Hospital, and more than 4,000 babies were born at Renown.

Those services are not future promises. They are the current clinical foundation that the planned standalone facility is intended to consolidate and expand.

Alliance participation is real, but it is not a building specification

Renown is now part of the Golisano Children’s Alliance, a national initiative that the Golisano Foundation says supports pediatric care through strategic funding, collaboration, shared learning, service expansion, and access to care closer to home.

For the community, that affiliation is a meaningful institutional connection. It does not, by itself, establish the final size of the Reno hospital, guarantee a certain specialty program, or replace the normal work of planning, permitting, financing, and construction.

What remains proposed or undisclosed

The building itself is planned—not under construction

Renown’s language is clear: it has announced plans to build a standalone hospital. Local coverage published on the announcement date reported that a construction timeline had not yet been announced.

As of this writing, there is no public groundbreaking date or opening date. It would be premature to describe the facility as underway or to attach a completion year to it.

The full project cost is not public

The $40 million gift is confirmed, but Renown has not publicly announced the total cost of the standalone hospital. The public release also does not identify whether additional fundraising, debt financing, public support, or other capital sources will be used for the full project.

In practical terms, the confirmed gift should be viewed as substantial project-enabling funding—not as evidence that every dollar required for the final hospital has already been committed.

Final scope, design, and capacity are still to come

Industry coverage says the new facility is expected to consolidate and expand services currently spread across Renown Regional, including the Level II pediatric trauma center, Level III NICU, and 16-room PICU.

What has not been publicly released is just as important: a final service mix, future bed count, square footage, architectural design, construction team, site layout, parking approach, staffing plan, and permit schedule. Those are the details that will turn an announced project into a defined development plan.

Community fundraising should not be confused with the standalone-hospital budget

Northern Nevada’s Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) fundraising has supported Renown Children’s Hospital for decades. Renown says more than $20 million has been raised since 1988 for needs such as life-saving treatments, specialized equipment, and financial assistance for families.

That is valuable local support. But Renown has not said that existing CMN funds are part of the announced $40 million standalone-hospital capital plan. The two should be described separately unless Renown provides a formal connection.

Why this matters to Reno households

A region’s healthcare infrastructure shapes how people experience daily life, especially families caring for children with routine, urgent, or complex medical needs. A standalone children’s hospital could eventually make pediatric services more consolidated and more visible on the Renown Regional campus. That is the direction Renown has announced.

From a real-estate perspective, however, it is best to keep the conversation grounded. The announcement does not establish a specific effect on home values, rents, traffic, or individual neighborhood desirability. Those outcomes depend on future project details, broader market conditions, and the needs of each household.

For buyers, the useful question is more personal: Does access to this campus and the services that exist today fit your family’s daily routine and long-term priorities? For sellers, the project is a timely reminder that buyers often evaluate a home within the full ecosystem around it—not just by square footage or finishes.

Homes near the Renown Regional area may appeal to buyers who value central Reno access and proximity to major healthcare services. At the same time, the right home depends on many variables, including commute, budget, school preferences, property condition, and lifestyle. A proposed hospital should inform the conversation, not decide it.

What HomeGate Realty will be watching

The next meaningful updates will be tangible project milestones: a defined total budget, a campus site plan, an announced project team, approvals or permits, groundbreaking, construction progress, and an opening target. Until Renown publishes those details, the most accurate description is straightforward:

Renown has secured a historic $40 million gift and announced plans for a standalone children’s hospital on its Reno Regional campus. The vision is real, but the final facility details and construction timeline are still proposed.
